About Us and Our Vision
Sofantic is a nonprofit organization dedicated to achieving a plastic-free environment. Our endeavor to eliminate plastic from daily life has inspired us to share sustainable products and plastic pollution awareness together. What’s unique about Sofantic? We not only share eco-friendly products but also educate people on the importance of reducing plastic waste. Helping people with plastic waste management by finding and sharing solutions is what we strive for.
Penny Bowles, Founder
Penny Bowles, an experienced teacher and education consultant, is Sofantic’s Founder. Although sustainable products are not new, Penny officially launched Sofantic in July 2021 to work for the cause. Penny is a school teacher, qualitative researcher, mother, and nature enthusiast. She is fascinated by anything that has to do with fully engaging in what makes life enjoyable. On March 1, 2022, Penny sustained an mTBI, which is a mild traumatic brain injury, during her teaching day. For many people an mTBI, or concussion, has symptoms that go away within a few days. For some, it can take a few weeks. Then there are those who do not have enough of a reprieve from the symptoms that come with a mTBI to be able to work, even after months or years! This is what happened to Penny. She’s not able to work at this time, which has put a large pause in our launch and work. In order for us to move forward, we’ll need to do it without her working on the project. She is not able to run or work for our non-profit at this time, but will remain on the Eliminate Plastic Pollution team no matter her ability or disability. We wish her all the best for a full recovery!
Lawrence Gaughan, Executive Director
Renaissance man, Lawrence Gaughan, is our acting Executive Director of Sofantic. Lawrence studied nonprofit process and organization at Pepperdine University and is using his background and experience as the founding executive director of the civic engagement foundation GOV360 to re-launch our environmental nonprofit organization. Lawrence’s experience includes credited stage and film acting, directing, and musical performance. As a semi-retired credited actor, Lawrence is familiar with the intersection of media and art, communication and purpose, and how to reach out to large groups to activate change. Time spent creating, writing, playing and mixing original music in his studio is just one of many ways that he synthesizes variety and difference into unity. Creating with harmony, rhythm and tone, weaving in lyrics and fine-tuning the details to create something meaningful and lasting comes from a motivation that is not-for-profit, but for love and beauty – an offering to the world.
We aim to do something quite similar at Sofantic. Pulling together talents, ideas, and resources to find innovations to sustain our ways of living in a manner the preserves and respects the beauty and brilliance of our natural world. We want to offer solutions to eliminating plastic pollution and guide those solutions with love to heal our world of the damage we have endured because of this problem.
